Northern California USSSA

2017 Classification Appeal Criteria and Procedure

The USSSA team classification system is the key to equalizing and balancing team competition in tournament play. USSSA does not classify league teams. However, USSSA does classify individual league teams for tournament play. If a team has not played in tournament competition or did not play last year, the team manager should contact his/her local area director to determine proper classification. If a team played last year, the classification remains the same until any modifications are made.

In order to promote this classification parity, class definitions have been established as points or guidelines, which are then used by the Classification Committees to evaluate teams. The main criteria includes, but is not limited to:

  • Past history of the team
  • Tournament results
  • Amount of last year’s participation
  • Results of State, NIT’s, and World tournaments
  • Determination of the ability of the players that have been picked up for the coming year
  • Players from previous year’s roster
  • Home run capability (for guideline use only)
  • Team roster
  • Major players

A team must play in a minimum of four (4) USSSA tournaments prior to appealing for a reclassification. Teams may not submit an appeal until May 1.  Teams bumped by the USSSA By-Laws may appeal between June 1 and July 1.

The Northern California USSSA Classification Committees will conduct periodic reviews of tournament results and have the right and authority to reclassify and require any team or player to play up at a higher level at any point during the season, except when a team has been reclassified by the USSSA Constitution. Teams and players reclassified by the USSSA Constitution must remain in their new classification for a period of one (1) year. Adding players of a higher classification may require a team to play at a higher level. Players may move from team to team within a classification provided they are not frozen to a team’s roster by winning a State, or World berth. Any forming team that has four (4) or more players off the roster of a team that was moved up the previous year will be required to play in the higher division. The Northern California USSSA Classification Committees reserve the right to review any team that brings players in from out of state.

Players may not be laundered. Each team manager must list on his roster, the names of each Major or A player.

If a team plays in a tournament classified lower than its team’s classification, any State or World tournament berth may be revoked and the team may be suspended from further play. It is important to note that this rule may be applied retroactively based on sanction reports and information from other directors and states.

Tournament director(s) reserve the right to reclassify any team at a particular event based on their overall team strength. The team in question will be given the option of dropping a player(s) and participating at their designated class or using a player(s) and playing at the adjusted level of classification. Either way, the team will be responsible for the tournament entry fee.

Appeals must be submitted via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and teams must use the Team Classification Appeal Form. No phone calls are accepted. Appeals must include a current roster. The respective Classification Committee will review and research requests and via email within two (2) weeks of receipt. Only the Northern California USSSA Classification Committees may reclassify teams for tournament play.

The players list may be found at Team & Player Info. It is the responsibility of each manager to check the players list before entering their team in a tournament. Players have the right to appeal their classification. Such appeal must be made prior to March 13.
